City Snapshot on Hunger and Homelessness in America  

The U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) has released its annual Report on Hunger and Homelessness. This year, the Homelessness Research Institute at the Alliance collaborated with the USCM and found that many mayors are challenged by the lack of resources when responding to homelessness.

“The one thing we found to be almost universally true among the surveyed cities was that the lack of affordable housing prevented them from solving the problem of homelessness,” said Nan Roman, President and CEO of the Alliance. “While the report shows that many of the cities are able to reduce homelessness, the national lack of affordable housing is likely to have a chilling effect on their efforts over the coming years.”

Senate passes veteran reform

The Senate has passed the Miller-Blumenthal Veterans Health Care and Benefits Act. The bill is expected to be signed by the President.

Among the provisions in H.R. 6416 are the expansion of Veterans Affairs benefits to veterans fleeing abuse and with less than honorable discharges . The bill also provides a statutory mandate for the existence of the National Center on Homelessness Among Veterans.
